KATHA UPANISHAD
PART ONE
Chapter I

1
Vajasravasa, desiring rewards, performed the Visvajit sacrifice, in which he gave away all his property. He had a son named Nachiketa.
2-3
When the gifts were being distributed, faith entered into the heart of Nachiketa, who was still a boy. He said to himself: Joyless, surely, are the worlds to which he goes who gives away cows no longer able to drink, to eat, to give milk, or to calve.

Teachings of Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi, Swami Vivekananda

1. Meditate upon the Knowledge and Bliss Eternal, and you will also have bliss. The Bliss indeed is eternal, only it is covered and obscured by ignorance.
2. The less your attachment is towards the senses, the more will be your love towards God.
3. Those who wish to attain God and progress in religious devotion should particularly guard themselves against the snares of lust and wealth. Otherwise they can never attain perfection.
4. Iron, after it is converted into gold by the touch of philosopher’s stone, may be kept under the ground or thrown into a rubbish heap; it will always remain gold and will not return to its former condition. Similar is the state of the man whose soul has touched, the feet of the almighty Lord. Whether he dwell in the bustle of the world, or in the solitude of the forest.
5. it’s enough to have faith in one aspect of God. Never get into your head that your faith alone is true and every other is false. Know for certain that God without form is real and that God with form is also real. Then hold fast whichever faith appeals to you.

Teachings and Commentaries of Sri Ramakrishna

He who is the Lord of the Universe will teach everyone. He alone teaches us, who has created this universe; who has made the sun and moon, men and beasts, and all other beings; who has provided means for their sustenance; who has given children parents and endowed them with love to bring them up. The Lord has done so many things - will He not show people the way to worship Him? If they need teaching, then He will be the Teacher. He is our Inner Guide. "Suppose there is an error in worshipping the clay image; doesn't God know that through it He alone is being invoked? He will he pleased with that very worship. Why should you get a headache over it? You had better try for knowledge and devotion yourself. Even if the image is made of clay, there is need for that sort of worship. God Himself has provided different forms of worship. He who is the Lord of the Universe has arranged all these forms to suit different men in different stages of knowledge. "The mother cooks’ different dishes to suit the stomachs of her different children.

Teachings and Commentaries – Swami Shivananda

1. Spiritual efforts without sincere love for God are fruitless. Sincere love is what counts. Sri Ramakrishna used to say that when the three attachments- that of a devoted wife for her husband, of a mother for her child and of a miser for his wealth - become one, then one realizes God. If anyone feels the same intense longing as would result if these three attachments were united, only then does he have God-vision. Sincere love brings God-realization and in that alone is genuine peace and joy. ‘Of course, without the grace of God one cannot have such love overnight, and that is why regular practice is necessary. One should cry to God, laying bare the heart. “O Lord, be merciful to me. I am an ordinary man. How can I hope to realize Thee unless Thou vouchsafest to appear before me? Have mercy on me, O Lord; have mercy on this weak being!” Pray this way to Him every day. The more you cry to Him the more your mind will be cleansed. The Lord will reveal Himself to the pure transparent mind.
2. Real peace is very difficult - full of thorns. “Sharp as the blade of a razor and hard to cross is the way to self-knowledge-so the sages have described it.” These are the actual words of the illumined seers. The path is indeed extremely difficult, however easy it may seem to those who have not entered it. Great effort is required to make progress in the realm of the Spirit. But if one sincerely wants to realize God, it is certainly true that he will receive His grace. In the life of Sri Ramakrishna that even he had to go through tremendous spiritual discipline before gaining the vision of the Mother.

Swami Brahmananda’s Spiritual Teachings

1. Spiritual life should begin early

1. Those who are not spiritually-minded while they live in the world can never be spiritually-minded when they retire from the world.
2. Unless we have sown the seed of spiritual life in our soul, there is no possibility of creating the spiritual instinct in later life.
3. One has to begin as early as possible with one’s spiritual life, whatever the worldly-minded may say. The cleverness of all such worldly people is just like that of the crow. It thinks itself terribly clever and worldly-wise, but eats filth and dirt all the same. Worldly people always tell you that there is plenty of time for you to take up spiritual life. First enjoy your youth, and then, in old age, there will be time enough to do your practice and lead a spiritual life. And then, when you grow old, you find that the old impressions have become so deep that there is no possibility of effacing them, that you have become slaves of your impulses and instincts and old impressions and can no longer act in the way you would like to, cannot take up a higher and purer life, neither mentally nor physically.

Spiritual Teachings of Swami Brahmananda

Is it possible to have that taste in the beginning? No. Struggle hard to attain it. Concentrate all your energies on its achievement, and never for a moment pay heed to other matters. Apply yourself whole-heartedly to it and to it alone. Onward, onward! Never be satisfied with your present state of mind. Try to create within yourself a burning dissatisfaction. Say to you "What progress am I making? Not a bit." Sri Ramakrishna used to say to the Divine Mother "Mother, another day is gone and I have not seen Thee!” Every night before you go to bed, think for a while how much time you have spent in doing good deeds, how much again in doing useless things; how much time you have utilized in meditation and how much you have wasted in idleness. Make your mind strong through Tapasya (austerity) and Brahmacharya (continence). In rich men's houses they keep a Darwan (porter) whose duty is to prevent thieves, cows, sheep, etc., from entering the compound.
